Laurens van der Wee is a sonic designer, 'electronic musician' and composer of electronic music from The Netherlands.
He gained his Master of Music and Bachelor of Art and Technology degree at the
Music Technology department of the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2011 and 2009 respectively.
After playing piano and cello, among other instruments, Laurens has now found a way to work with music and sound, art and technology at the same time.
Work varies from tape composition to audiovisual performance and from live electronics to music for modern dance. Work has been presented in Hong Kong, Montreal, Porto, Barcelona, Belfast and Udine, as well as dozens of performances and exhibitions in The Netherlands. Contexts include ICMC2008 and 2009, SMC2009 and 2010, Contemporanea 2010 and the Hong Kong International Dance Symposium.

lemuriformes is a collaborative improvisational performance project in which live coding, painting and electronic
music blend together in one experience. Many issues are addressed in the process, such as the role of the graphical
representation of code in live coding performances, live coding as a means of sound transformation
[rather than synthesis], human and machine involvement levels in electronic music and live coding in
collaborative performances.
The main reason to start this unusual cooperation was to share a positive and playful experience in
which the personal qualities of the collaborators have their role defined on the fly. From it we learned
that it definitely creates an interesting combination of crosshatched and intersecting auditory and visual
palettes, which we will continue to explore.
Ink: Julie Dassaud, synthesizer: Eliad Wagner, circuits: Roel van Doorn, code: Laurens van der Wee.
lemuriformes will be featured on the Computer Music Journal 2011 issue 4 dvd, dedicated to live coding.
A video of the Theater Kikker performance and more can be found on our dedicated webpage: lemuriformes.org

The Cake is a sonic improvisation system, built to perform with a musician. An analysis algorithm will reduce two incoming sound streams to one single stream, cut this up and classify the segments. This library is then used to drive the synthesis. The Cake likes to be judged on its musical output.

No Sine Cure is about sound and image melting together in one experience. Inspired by the images emerging
from sound, audible patterns and new images are created, using generative algorithms, programming and controlling.
Image and sound have the same source, No Sine Cure explores the ability of the audience to make connections between the two.
No Sine Cure is a live performance, which means in this case that all sound and image is generated live,
without the use of samples or video manipulation. It's just me and my oscillosope, camera and laptop.

Technology Penetrates Tradition is the name of an exchange project initiated by ZOEY, foundation for arts and culture.
Ten Dutch students in Music and Technology went to Macedonia to collaborate with ten Macedonians in a project about the confrontation of technology with
tradition.
In the context of this project, I made a performance for kaval (local shepherd's flute) and live electronics with Vladimir, did some visuals for an electronics performance by
Sjoerd van der Sanden, Martijn Duiven and Branislav Gerazov and was involved with some live coding contests (which was big fun).

A dance project in which I participate as an electronics and sonic designer. Together with Roel van Doorn, who will look after the interactive projections, I write the software for an interactive modern improvisation dance piece. 'A Blind Date?' is a collaborative project about modern dance and electronic music. In February 2009, I worked with Benedikt MacIsaac, choreographer,
Brechje Schoen, scenographer, and Ilse van Haastrecht, Jac Carlsson and Keonjoong Kim (dancers) on a twenty minute piece called
'Warm Lamma Lamma or how to Rhubarb'.
The given theme was 'Twisted Spaces'. Imagine three people entering a black hole, the ultimate twisted space; what will happen next?

As a final project of my Bachelors, I made a performance for cello and electronics. I worked together with Noelle Casella.
There were a few things that I focussed on in this project.
First of all, I looked for a way to express myself musically, to play an instrument, rather than turning knobs. Therefore I decided to try to build my own
'instrument'. The idea was not to work on an object that makes use of the best materials to be found, i.e.
high-end pick-up elements, top class strings or a maple sounding box, but to escape from controlling effects and to build a device
with accompanying software that would give
me the opportunity to play it intuitively. It worked pretty well, although I didn't escape from the knobs and sliders completely.
The final performance included a projection of a system that generated graphic scores live. At certain points a printer on stage started printing the generated scores that were then played by the performers. The playing is improvisational, with each other but also with the printer sound. In the theatrical last part the printer is stopped from printing. This has a parallel with the selfmade instrument: throwing away the burden of technology that is dictating the musical output.

Kiestoon is an installation that was made by Roel van Doorn, Arjan Loogman, Sjoerd van der Sanden and myself. It was built for the e-Live concert in January 2009.
Kiestoon consists of the insides of a piano and a computer. Computer sounds are generated with the piano and vice versa, raising question about the role of the computer in the very context that the installation was also a part of.

A piece for tenor recorder and live electronics for the e-Live project with Francesca Thompson on recorder. In contradiction to "Ode to K42", this piece is fixed: no improvisation involved.

In november 2008 I took part in a competition set up by the Utrecht Composers Collective (UCC).
In december 2008 my piece has been played as part of four performances called 'De Regelmeesters', that consisted of four pieces for piano, bass clarinet,
cello and live electronics.
Serving as an interlude, there were also three pieces for tape, one of which was mine, based on sounds created with a cello in an acoustically dead room.
The 8 speaker piece is called 'Bedoelde u: Tegelmeesters'.
Right after the first four performances, I made a new mix, based on my experience during Regelmeesters. I also changed the name to 'Tilemaster'. This piece has been accepted for the SMC and ICMC conferences in 2009.

With Francesca Thompson I worked on a piece called
'Ode to K42'. This was performed at the Listening Landscape festival

In 2008, I worked on the realisation of Anthèmes 2 by Pierre Boulez. Together with Roel van
Doorn and Sjoerd van der Sanden, I programmed the software for the electronics part. Marleen Wester played the violin.
Special about this project is the fact
that Boulez decided to put everything on paper, the old fashioned way. The process of creating an electro acoustic work from scratch from just a score, is quite unique.

For the analogue studio at the Utrecht School of the Arts, I've built a light dependent controller together with
Roelof de Koning. This happened in January and June 2007. The photograph for the panel of the second (June) version has been made by Evelien van Zonneveld.
The controller has 12 independent LDR's on it, each with its own circuit. It is connected to a patchbay in the studio, so it's easy to work with.
The sound is the result of some sessions where we used the controller to, well, control our analogue patch. Synthesizers include an ARP2600, Roland and Synton modular systems and a Doepfer sequencer.

Television, does it influence us or do we influence it?
The In-Sucking Power of the General Excuse is an installation/performance initiated with Sylvain Vriens which takes in and processes a live television
signal and outputs new images and sounds. It plays with the narrative and shows the level of abstraction and randomness we have gotten used to.
The performer or user uses a normal remote control to switch channels to generate new images and sounds.
Each time the channel changes a new algorithm is triggered. At first the channel will show normally and then gradually
the algorithm changes the image and the sound. In some cases this is hardly noticeable, sometimes it is more direct,
all depending on the expectations one has of the channel being watched.
Like with regular television, you have no real control on what is output.
If you don't like what you see and hear you can only change the channel.
